The major obstacle currently is lack of cost effective broadband Internet connection in rural Kenya. Currently Kenya is laying fiber optics network nationwide to connect to The East African Marine Systems (TEAMS) which will lower the cost of broadband connectivity substantially in rural Kenya.

This means great things are on the way for Independent publishers, bloggers and other online publishers in Kenya and Africa to monetize using Google Adsense. Many bloggers in India, Europe and the US are already enjoying the benefits of Adsense and steadily making money online as a way of living or to support a living.

Major Newspapers such as standard online and nation online already make money online using Google Adsense majorly because they have a dedicated staff running the online aspect of their publishing business.

As an independent publisher in Kenya raising enough capital to establish independent publishing business is a major hindrance, but with a step by step and a carefully thought out plan one can start an independent online publishing business with minimal funds by first utilizing the many Internet cafés available in Kenya to publish content and then work your way up to purchase equipment and build a team to support the business.

Domain registration in Kenya is about Kenya Shillings 3,000 plus the cost of hosting for a year. To be competitive in independent online publishing… it requires building a good team consisting of a good webmaster, writing and publishing editors and the Technical Infrastructure services such as a dedicated server with good bandwidth, traffic monitoring services and of course paying for content distribution services.
